Selected No. 8 overall in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft, Kawulok was signed March 1, 2012. He became the fourth member of the Timbers development team, the Portland Timbers U-23s, to sign with the first team. Kawulok was a standout at the University of Portland during his collegiate career and earned West Coast Conference Defender of the Year following his senior campaign in 2011.
2012: Started and played all 90 minutes in all 10 matches for the Timbers Reserves in the MLS Reserve League ... Logged a team-best 900 minutes and logged an assist ... Set up a goal by Brent Richards in a 2-2 draw June 18 against the Chivas USA Reserves ... Played 30 minutes in overtime of a third-round loss to Cal FC in the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ... Notched an assist and was one of only two Timbers players to log the full 90 in a friendly against EPL side Aston Villa FC on July 24 ... Played the second half of a friendly against Spanish club Valencia CF on May 23 ... Was on the match-day roster for three regular-season matches ... Signed by the club on March 1, and scored the equalizer that night in a preseason 1-1 draw against Chivas USA.
2011: Anchored the Timbers U-23s backline, appearing in all 16 regular-season matches in the Premier Development League, and was one of only players in the entire league to play each minute of every match … Scored a pair of goals during the season … Earned PDL All-Western Conference honors for a second consecutive season.
2010: Was a key contributor to a historic season for the Timbers U-23s, helping the team become the first undefeated PDL champion in league history … The Timbers U-23s posted a perfect 20-0-0 record throughout the regular season and playoffs … Played in 14 regular-season matches, helping the Timbers U-23s to a perfect 16-0-0 regular-season record … Started all four playoff matches … Contributed greatly to a backline that allowed a league-low six goals during the season … Scored the second hat trick in team history against the Yakima Reds June 12 and was subsequently named the PDL Player of the Week …Named to the PDL 2010 All-Western Conference Team … Scored three goals in 2010.
