How Acquired: Traded to the Revolution from Toronto FC on June 4, 2008 in exchange for the rights to one of New England’s international roster spots through 2010

2010: Appeared in 28 MLS matches, including 25 starts, recording two goals and one assist. His 28 appearances tied for the team lead and marked a new single-season best for the third-year pro. Made 23 appearances in the central midfield, and five at central defense. Recorded his first MLS regular-season assist at Columbus (May 8). Scored his first career goal - the game-winning goal on a header off a Chris Tierney free kick - against D.C. United (Aug. 7). Scored his second career goal against Columbus (Sept. 25), notching a second-minute strike off Marko Perovic’s free kick. Picked up his fifth yellow card of the season on Oct. 10 at Houston and missed the team’s last home game on Oct. 16 against Kansas City. Appeared in all five SuperLiga matches, making two starts. Came on in the central midfield in the 64th minute against Pumas (July 14). Came on in the 70th minute against Chicago (July 17), but was forced off the field in stoppage time after a head-to-head collision with the Fire’s Peter Lowry, which resulted in a large gash on the left side of his head and which required 12 stitches to close after the game. Came back the next game and started in the central midfield against Monarcas Morelia (July 20). Came on as a second-half substitute for an injured Kevin Alston and converted the fourth penalty kick in the Revs’ 5-3 shootout win over Puebla (Aug. 4).

2009: Made 21 regular-season MLS appearances - including 13 starts - all as a central midfielder. Overall, made 28 appearances, including time in the U.S. Open Cup, SuperLiga and MLS Cup Playoffs. His substitute appearances were frequently made to move Shalrie Joseph up to forward from the midfield, pairing Jeff Larentowicz with Phelan in the midfield. Made his 2009 debut in the 1-1 draw at D.C. (April 17). Started 10 consecutive matches from May 9 - July 25. Fractured his right wrist in stoppage time of the 4-2 loss to Kansas City (Sept. 5), but started the next match against Chivas USA (Sept. 13) while wearing a heavily-padded cast, which he wore for the rest of the season. Played the final 75 minutes of the 2-1, extra-time loss to the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL-2 (June 30) in the center of midfield after replacing Larentowicz at halftime. Wore the captain’s armband for the remainder of the game after Larentowicz served as captain in the first half. Started all four SuperLiga matches, playing all 360 minutes of the Revs’ run in the tournament in the center of midfield. Appeared as a second-half substitute in both games of the Eastern Conference Semifinal Series against Chicago in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Earned his first career professional assist on Shalrie Joseph’s game-winning goal in the 75th minute of the Game 1 victory (Nov. 1). Almost sent the series into extra time with a late goal in Game 2 (Nov. 7), but his 89th-minute header flew just wide of the right post.

2008: Originally drafted by Toronto in the first round (10th overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, was traded to the Revs on June 4. Made 11 regular-season appearances, including five starts in the defensive midfield. Overall, made 19 appearances, including 10 starts in the regular season, U.S. Open Cup, SuperLiga, CONCACAF Champions League and MLS Cup Playoffs. Made his MLS and Revolution debut on June 12 at Houston, starting in the center of midfield and playing 80 minutes alongside Jeff Larentowicz. Played every minute of all three U.S. Open Cup matches (July 1 vs. Richmond, July 8 vs. Crystal Palace, Aug. 12 at D.C.) in the central midfield. Made two appearances in SuperLiga, including a start against Pachuca (July 16). Suffered a concussion after a collision with Sainey Nyassi late in the game, and missed the Chivas USA (July 20) and Atlante semifinal (July 30) matches. Was available and dressed for the final against Houston (Aug. 5), but did not play. Made two appearances in the CONCACAF Champions League against Joe Public, starting in the away leg in Trinidad (Aug. 26). Also made four starts in the Reserve Division. Before joining the Revs through a trade with Toronto FC on June 4, made four appearances with TFC’s reserves, but did not make a first-team appearance.

COLLEGE: Appeared in 82 games with Wake Forest, starting 78 in his four-year career … mainly a defender, Phelan saw time as a defensive midfielder during his senior year … scored two goals and added seven career assists … a 2007 first-team NSCAA All-American and All-ACC first-team selection … a two-time NSCAA All-South performer … helped the Demon Deacons win the 2007 NCAA College Cup.

U.S. NATIONAL TEAM: A former member of the U.S. Under-18 and Under-20 National Teams … helped the U20s solidify a spot in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland … invited to the January 2008 Under-23 training camp.

PERSONAL: Married his wife, Maggie, on Jan. 10, 2009 … is the son of Thomas and Phyllis Phelan … was a double major in political science and Spanish at Wake Forest … was the 2003 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, as well as the 2003 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year while attending Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass. ... cousin of Gerard Phelan, who famously caught Doug Flutie’s “Hail Mary” pass to help Boston College defeat the University of Miami, 47-45, in the 1984 Orange Bowl.
