Marco Etcheverry is one of the best midfielders to ever play in Major League Soccer.
He signed with D.C. United upon the formation of Major League Soccer in 1996 and is arguably the greatest player to ever wear United’s uniform. He led DC to three of the first four MLS Cups and was named MLS Most Valuable Player in 1998.
In eight seasons with D.C. United, Etcheverry appeared in 191 games, scored 34 goals, and had 101 assists. He still holds DC career records for games and assists.
Etcheverry was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI team in 2005.
Etcheverry began his career in 1986 and played for various clubs in his native Bolivia, Spain, Chile, and Colombia. He played in 81 matches for Bolivian side Destroyers and notched 17 goals from 1986-1989. He went on to star at Bolivar, also of Bolivia, from 1990-1991 when he appeared in 99 contests and found the back of the net 29 times.
Marco Etcheverry is considered one of the best Bolivian players of all time. He spent 14 seasons with the Bolivian National team from 1989-2003 and registered 71 caps for his home country. He netted 13 goals in that time, perhaps none of them bigger than his strike that downed Brazil in a qualifier for the 1994 World Cup.
