Columbus (2020): Diaz made 21 regular-season appearances (14 starts as a right-midfielder).  His first appearance came on Opening Match against New York City FC (March 1) as a substitute for Youness Mokhtar. Diaz started at right-midfielder on the road at Seattle Sounders FC (March 7), where he recorded his first assist of the 2020 campaign. He then made three appearances (two starts) in the Group Stage of the MLS is Back Tournament, starting against FC Cincinnati* (July 11), coming in as a substitute against the New York Red Bulls* (July 16) and returning to the starting lineup against Atlanta United* (July 21). Diaz made a total of four appearances (three starts) during the MLS is Back Tournament. He started at home against Chicago Fire FC (August 20) and also made a start on the road at New York City FC (August 24). Diaz made a substitute appearance at home against FC Cincinnati (September 6) and provided his second regular-season assist. He then made consecutive starts on the road at Chicago Fire FC (September 12) and at home against Nashville SC (September 19) and Minnesota United FC (September 23). The midfielder then made five more appearances (four starts) from September 27 through the October 18 home match against New York City FC. He then made five consecutive appearances (two starts) from October 24 through November 8, notably providing the game-winning assist coming off the bench at home against the Philadelphia Union (November 1). 2019 (Columbus): Luis Diaz made 13 regular-season appearances (ninestarts as a right midfielder) in 2019, scoring two goals and providing four assists since joining the Club on July 2. He made his 2019 regular-season debut in a road contest against the Chicago Fire (July 17) coming into the match as a substitute for Eduardo Sosa in the 65th minute. Diaz marked the occasion by also recording his first career assist on Romario Williams 90th minute goal. Diaz recorded his first career MLS start during a road match against the San Jose Earthquakes (August 3), playing all 90 minutes of the contest and marking the occasion by providing the assist of Gyasi Zardes’ 65th minute goal. Diaz returned to the starting lineup during a road contest against FC Cincinnati (August 25) playing 65 minutes. He recorded his second goal (first game-winning) of the 2019 regular-season during a road contest against Atlanta United (September 14). Following his efforts against Atlanta, Diaz was named to MLSSoccer.com’s Team of the Week. He tallied his third regular-season assist in a 2-0 home victory against the Philadelphia Union (September 29). Diaz did not make an appearance in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.  

International Experience

At the international level, Diaz has earned three caps with the Costa Rica National Team since making his debut as a substitute earlier this year in a friendly against Uruguay (September 6). He earned his second cap in a Concacaf Nations League group stage match in 2019 against Curacao (October 13). The midfielder's latest cap came in a 2020 friendly against the U.S. (February 1).
