Overview
Jonathan Bornstein, a native of Los Alamitos, Calif., joined Chivas USA as a fourth-round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft out of UCLA. A three-time All-Star, Bornstein has become a mainstay on the back line for the Red-and-White, while also cementing a role on the United Sates National Team.

An attacking player in college at UCLA (2005) and Cal Poly Pomona (2002-2004), Bornstein made the transition to defense in his first season with Chivas USA. His first season for the Red-and-White was impressive, as he started every match for the team, scored six goals and added four assists, and was named MLS Rookie of the Year. Since then he has earned three consecutive All-Star nominations, and was named Chivas USA’s Defender of the Year in 2009. Since making his debut with the United States National Team on Jan. 20, 2007 against Denmark, a game in which he scored, Bornstein has earned 25 caps with the team as of February 2010. Bornstein played in all five matches that the U.S. played at the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009, where the team earned second place, and he also scored the game tying goal in a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica on Oct. 14, 2009, securing the top spot in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for the United States Men’s National Team.

MLS Experience
2009: Bornstein spent time at both center and left back while starting all 26 matches he played for Chivas USA, earning one assist. He was named to the MLS All-Star team for the third straight season and was named Chivas USA’s Defender of the Year.

2008: Splitting time between defense and midfield, Bornstein scored two goals and added two assists in 21 games (19 as a starter), missing some time due to injuries. Was named to the MLS All-Star Team for the second straight season and played 88 minutes in a 3-2 win over West Ham United, and was also named Chivas USA's U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for his charity work off the field.

2007: Started all 23 matches he played, notching a goal and an assist. Became the first Chivas USA player to appear in an MLS All-Star game when he played 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Celtic.

2006: Named Gatorade MLS Rookie of the Year after finishing third in league - and first among field players - in minutes played, starting each of Chivas USA's 32 matches. Also led all MLS rookies in goals scored, with six, and added four assists. Successfully made the transition to defense, after playing primarily as an attacker in college.

International
Debuted for the U.S. National Team on January 20, 2007, scoring a goal in a 3-1 victory over Denmark at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Bornstein has played a total of 25 matches for the United States, playing in all five games at the Confederations Cup in South Africa helping the U.S. to its best-ever finish (second) at a FIFA tournament. His goal in the final match of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup gave the U.S. a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica, and made him a national hero in Honduras, who clinched a spot in the World Cup partially because of the U.S. result. In 2007, he played for the team in the Copa America in Venezuela, and helped the team win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the same year.

Bornstein also represented the United States at the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel, helping the team to a silver medal, and scoring twice in a quarterfinal victory over South Africa.

College
As a senior at UCLA, Bornstein started all 20 games, scoring 5 goals and registering 4 assists. Prior to his time with the Bruins, he played at Cal Poly Pomona, where in just two seasons he managed to ranked second in career assists (19), fifth in career goals (19) and third in career points (53). Earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors in his sophomore year, and was named CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2002.

Youth Teams
Won a national championship with the Irvine Strikers club team, winning the Golden Boot. Played high school soccer at Los Alamitos High, where he was named first-team all-county, All-CIF and team MVP honors after scoring 23 goals and 16 assists en route to the CIF championship (2001).
