Toronto FC selected Emery Welshman with the sixteenth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Prior to selecting Welshman, Toronto FC made two trades. The first deal with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC where the Reds acquired the tenth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft along with allocation money in exchange for the fourth overall pick. Toronto then sent the tenth overall pick to the Seattle Sounders FC for the sixteenth overall pick and allocation money.

“Emery is a superior athlete with a great deal of potential,” said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. “He’s strong and fast and has the ability to support the team out wide or up front.

Welshman spent the past two seasons at Oregon State, appearing in 35 games for the Beavers, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists. He was named to the First Team All-Pac 12 team in 2011 and in 2012 and led the Pac-12 Conference in goals scored in 2012.

Prior to joining the Beavers, Welshman began his collegiate career at Siena College. He made 35 appearances, scoring 19 goals and adding six assists for the Saints. In 2010 he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year as well as leading the conference in goals scored. Prior to his collegiate career, Welshman played his youth soccer with the Sigma Elite Training Centre program. 

College (Siena and Oregon State): Played two seasons at Siena College, starting all 19 matches as a freshman (6 goals, 3 assists) and leading the MAAC conference with 13 goals as a sophomore in 2010 ... Started all 18 matches in his first year at Oregon State in 2011, earning All-PAC12 first-team honors with a team-high 7 assists ... In his final season in 2012, he was again All-PAC12 first-team with 10 goals and four assists.

Club: Portland Timbers Under-23 during the summer of 2012 ... Played for Canadian Academy Team Sigma FC.

High School: Loyola Catholic Secondary ... Attended Loyola Catholic Secondary and graduated in 2009 ... Selected the team's MVP as a junior and senior ... Named the High School Student-Athlete of the Year as a senior.
