Carlos Alvarez

Chivas USA selected the University of Connecticut midfielder Carlos Alvarez with the second-overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The 22-year-old Mexican-American from East Los Angeles started 21 games in his final season for the Huskies, recording seven goals and nine assists in his senior year. The 5-foot-10 Alvarez was named Big East Conference Midfielder of the Year while earning All-Big East First Team honors.

Alvarez, a M.A.C Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2012, was called into the Under-20 U.S. national team in 2008 and Mexico’s U-20 national team in 2009.

College: Attended the University of Connecticut. Started all 19 games in which he appeared during his freshman year (2009), scoring two goals and a Big East-leading 11 assists. Named Big East Rookie of the Year, earned a spot on All-Big East Third Team, All-Big East Rookie Team, Soccer America All-Freshman Team and NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team ... Followed up by starting all 20 of the games he appeared in during the 2010 season, with four goals and 14 assists (again leading the Big East) to his name. His 0.70 assists per game were good for fourth in the country. Named All-Big East First Team and NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team ... Started 21 of the 22 games he played in during the 2011 season, tallying six goals and eight assists. Earned All-America Second Team and All-Northeast Region First Team honors from the NSCAA, named Third Team All-American by College Soccer News and All-Big East Second Team. Selected to 2011 Big East All-Tournament team ... In 2012, started all 21 of the games he played in, contributing seven goals and nine assists to finish No. 14 on UConn's all-time points list with 82. Named Big East Midfielder of the Year, All-Big East First Team, NSCAA All-America Second Team, College Soccer News First Team All-American. Ranked the #3 player among upperclassmen in TopDrawerSoccer.com's Dec. 17, 2012 rankings, and was named to the site's Team of the Season for 2012. MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist for 2012 season.

Prep: Attended Bishop Mora Salesian in Los Angeles, Calif. Led his team to four league championship titles, earned First Team All-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) in 2007 and 2008.

Club: Played for the LAFC, named Offensive Player of the Year for his team in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, was named Athlete of the Year and most valuable player in the Santa Fe League. He played for the Pateadores in 2006 and led his team and was a 2008 Academy Finalist as he recorded the most goals and assists for his team.

International: Called into U-20 national team camps for both the USA (August 2008) and Mexico (March 2009).

Personal: Majored in Spanish and literature and culture.
