CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union announced the signing of Colombian Juan Diego González Alzate on Thursday, hours before their match with the Columbus Crew. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
González, 29, is an experienced center back who has spent time playing in his native Colombia along with stints in Mexico and Argentina. He joins a team short on defensive options as Peter Nowak only had five back-liners on the roster prior to the signing.
Philadelphia also announced that forward Sebastien Le Toux received his green card and will no longer take up one of the club’s international roster spots. Once he receives his International Transfer Certificate, Gonzalez will take Le Toux’s international spot on the roster.
He’ll join midfielders Toni Stahl, Eduardo Coudet and Roger Torres as the three other international players on the roster.
The moves come a little over a week since the team traded for former Chicago Fire midfielder Justin Mapp and the release of rookie goalkeeper Brian Perk.
