The Crew took on the U.S. Under-17 squad this morning in its first game action of 2010 preseason training camp, as they faced off against the U-17s in a series of three mini-matches on a windy and cool day in Bradenton, Fla.
The first match, which clocked in at 45 minutes, was dominated by the Crew with a 4-0 scoreline. Guillermo Barros Schelotto kicked things off for the Black & Gold with a corner kick in the second minute which found the head of Chad Marshall for an early goal. Then in the eighth minute, Robbie Rogers found Eddie Gaven with a pass down the sideline and Gaven sent a cross into the box where Schelotto slotted a shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Just five minutes later, the crew struck again when Gaven found newly-acquired Colombian forward Sergio Herrera in the middle of the field, who then found Rogers in space for the Crew's third goal in the first 15 minutes of play. Herrera capped the scoring for the Crew in the 22nd minute when he collected the rebound from a Schelotto shot and coolly put his shot into the net for the final 4-0 margin.
The second match ran 30 minutes and also saw the Crew walk away victorious, 3-0. Steven Lenhart found the net in the eighth minute thanks to a pass from Emilio Renteria to open the scoring for the Crew. Renteria then found the net himself just four minutes later to widen the margin to 2-0. The Crew closed its scoring with a third early strike in the 16th minute, when Frankie Hejduk found rookie first round pick Dilly Duka near the top of the box for a long shot that found the back of the net.
The third and final scrimmage - which also lasted 30 minutes - again saw the Crew earn a victory, this time by a score of 1-0. The Crew had a chance to take the lead in the 20th minute, when it earned a penalty kick, but Jason Garey's ensuing penalty try was saved by the U.S. U-17 goalkeeper, keeping the match scoreless. However, two minutes before the end of regulation, the Crew earned the game-winner when Garey found the Crew's second first round pick, Bright Dike, in space and Dike finished to give the Crew the win.
