RSL fall to Chivas in preseason play

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake suffered a 2-1 loss today against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., dropping its preseason record to 7-5-2 with one game remaining. RSL's lone goal was notched by FW Jeff Cunningham while Chivas' goals were scored by FW Juan Francisco Palencia and MF Francisco Mendoza. RSL and Chivas will face off again in just two weeks, when they meet in the opening game of Real's 2006 Major League Soccer campaign on Sunday, April 2 at 5:00 p.m. MT at The Home Depot Center.

"The first 15 and final 20 minutes were all Real Salt Lake," said RSL Head Coach John Ellinger. "It was a very emotional occasion to see Jason Kreis return to the field for the first time since injuring his left ACL in September."

RSL had two scoring opportunities within the first ten minutes of the half. MF Kevin Novak played a through ball to MF Andy Williams who rocketed a shot from the top of the box, but the shot sailed over the crossbar in the 4th minute. Just five minutes later, Williams slipped a ball down the right sideline to Cunningham who sent a shot wide left.

Chivas added the first goal of the game in the 31st minute. Palencia received a pass from FW Ante Razov at the edge of the penalty area and beat RSL goalkeeper Scott Garlick with a clever left-footed chip. Mendoza doubled Chivas USA's lead just two minutes later with a scrappy goal, sliding to strike a low cross from trialist Jesús Padilla at RSL's far post. RSL pulled one back in the final minute of the first half with a penalty-kick goal by Cunningham following a foul on FW Atiba Harris by Chivas 'keeper Preston Burpo.

RSL had a chance to tie the score in the 54th minute when former Chivas USA MF Christian Jiménez took a corner kick that deflected around the box until it bounced up to DF Carey Talley who attempted a bicycle kick sending the ball wide right. The highlight of the game was when FW Jason Kreis entered the match for DF Gustavo Cabrera making his first appearance for RSL since injuring his left ACL in September 2005.
