TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Nashville SC have signed free agent forward CJ Sapong, the club announced Wednesday. Sapong is signed through 2022 with a club option for 2023.

Sapong, 32, is entering his 11th MLS season. He spent the last few years with Chicago Fire FC and had two goals in 11 appearances (four starts) last season. All in all, Sapong has 71 goals and 25 assists in 276 career MLS appearances across stints with Sporting KC, Philadelphia Union and Chicago.

“CJ is a proven goal scorer who plays with the energy and enthusiasm needed in successful teams,” GM Mike Jacobs said in a club statement. “His athleticism and tenacity, coupled with his versatility to play multiple roles across the front line, makes him a handful to play against. He also adds to an attacking corps that really caught fire towards the end of our first season when we had our full complement of players. His addition only enhances that group.”

Sapong can play through the center or on the wing. Nashville are deep at both positions, with Jhonder Cadiz, Daniel Rios and Dom Badji as primary options through the center while Rodrigo Pineiro, Randall Leal, Alex Muyl and Handwalla Bwana top the depth char on either flank.
