D.C. United have re-signed midfielder Felipe Martins, the club announced Monday. The deal is for one season with a club option for 2022.

Felipe, 30, was acquired by United during the 2019 season from the Vancouver Whitecaps. He has made 16 starts over two seasons.

“Felipe is a veteran leader for our club. His presence in both the locker room and on the field, paired with his qualities on and off the ball make him a valuable member for us now and moving forward,” GM & VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a club statement. “We know Felipe will return stronger than ever next season and we look forward to him continuing to play a leadership role for us.”

The midfielder has been in MLS since 2012, making 256 career regular season appearances. He's spent time with CF Montreal and the New York Red Bulls, winning the 2015 Supporters' Shield with the club.

United officially appointed Hernan Lopez as head coach last week and selected Kimarni Smith (No. 4 overall) and Michael DeShields (No. 5 overall) in the SuperDraft.
