Colorado Rapids sign No. 9 overall SuperDraft pick Jeremy Kelly

TRANSFER TRACKER: Signing

The Colorado Rapids announced Tuesday that they've signed defender Jeremy Kelly to a one-year contract with a club option after the University of Carolina product impressed in preseason.

Kelly, 22, was picked No. 9 overall by the Montreal Impact in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, but was promptly traded to Colorado for $75,000 in 2020 General Allocation Money. Those funds were originally acquired from expansion side Nashville SC in exchange for the SuperDraft’s No. 11 pick.

“Jeremy was our top target going into the draft and his performances in preseason have backed up our decision to make the move for him on draft day,” said Padraig Smith, Rapids EVP and GM in a statement. “He’s a smart, versatile defender who reads the game well and shows real quality in possession. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop with us.”

Kelly, who was born in the Czech Republic, started 59 games (79 appearances) during his four seasons at UNC. He also contributed six goals and 12 assists, helping the Tar Heels advance to the College Cup in 2016 and 2017. He figures to be Keegan Rosenberry's main backup at right back in 2020.

Colorado are entering their first year with under head coach Robin Fraser, with an eye on their opener Feb. 29 at D.C. United.
