THIS SATURDAY'S LOS ANGELES GALAXY - COLUMBUS CREW MATCH TO BE TELEVISED LIVE ON KCAL 9: The Los Angeles Galaxy (9-6-8, 35 pts) enter the final seven games of the 2004 MLS Regular Season in a tie for first place in the Western Conference with the Kansas City Wizards. After enjoying the benefit of a bye last week, the club will return to action this Saturday, September 4, when they will play the first road match of the Steve Sampson era against the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. The game is also the final non-conference game of the 2004 season for the Galaxy, each of their final six will be crucial match-ups against Western Conference teams as they jockey for playoff position. The game against the Crew is slated for a 4:30 pm (PT) kickoff and will be televised live throughout the Southland on KCAL-9, beginning with the Galaxy Countdown pre-game show at 4:00 pm. Galaxy fans unable to be in front of their television that afternoon can listen to the game live on the radio in two languages, courtesy of KMPC 1540 AM (English) and KMXE 830 AM (Spanish).
GALAXY VICTIMS OF OWN SUCCESS - SIX PLAYERS WILL NOT APPEAR IN COLUMBUS
JONES, MARSHALL, MORENO AND RUIZ CALLED IN BY NATIONAL TEAMS: The Galaxy will find itself in Columbus without the services of three veteran starters, all called into their respective national teams for the next two match days of the semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying to 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany. Midfielder Cobi Jones has been called by U.S. Manager Bruce Arena for games against El Salvador on September 4 and at Panama on September 8. Jamaican defender Tyrone Marshall will be on the Reggae Boyz roster for matches with Panama on Sept. 4 and at El Salvador on Sept. 8. Forward Carlos Ruiz will represent his native Guatemala against Costa Rica on the 5th and in Honduras on the 8th. Additionally, forward Alejandro Moreno will be available for selection by Venezuela when vinotintos travel to Paraguay in their next CONMEBOL qualifier on September 5.
BROOME AND SARAGOSA WILL ALSO MISS MATCH IN COLUMBUS: After each received a yellow card from the referee in the Galaxy's last match against the Chicago Fire on August 21, Galaxy defender Paul Broome and midfielder Marcelo Saragosa will be forced to sit out the club next match at the Columbus Crew on September 4 due to caution point accumulation. Each of the players has collected 25 caution points over the course of the 2004 campaign to bring about the one-game suspension.
U.S. SOCCER FOUNDATION PASSBACK PROGRAM COMES TO THE HOME DEPOT CENTER SEPTEMBER 11: The Los Angeles Galaxy, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Eurosport, Kwik Goal and Western Union, are joining forces to bring the USSF Passback Program to the Galaxy's home game on Saturday, September 11 against the San Jose Earthquakes. Galaxy fans attending that evening's match are invited to donate "used but usable" soccer equipment to the collection - which will benefit local soccer organizations in Southern California. The donated soccer gear - jerseys, shorts, shoes, balls and shin guards are all acceptable - can be dropped off at any one of several locations throughout The Home Depot Center. In addition to the equipment being donated by fans attending the match, Western Union has pledged to contribute jerseys, shorts, shin guards and shoes as part of their local support of the Passback Program.
GALAXY - QUAKES GAME ON SEPTEMBER 11 A LOS ANGELES TIMES FAMILY NIGHT: The Galaxy are pleased to announce that their next home match - against the San Jose Earthquakes on September 11 will be the next chance this season for fans to purchase a Los Angeles Times Galaxy Family Pack.
