United 2, Metros 0 -- quote sheet
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2004 - D.C. UNITED 2, METROSTARS 0
METROSTARS HEAD COACH BOB BRADLEY
On the game:
"We have our work cut out for us next week. We will go down there, work hard all week and see if we can get ourselves back into this whole thing. It's disappointing to lose and especially give up that second goal."
On the performance of the midfield and Eddie Gaven:
"There were changes in the game. There were times that I thought that they had the better of our midfield and times that I thought we were able to turn the tables and have the better on them a little bit. When Eddie plays, his strongest ability is to run out of the midfield and cause trouble by joining in with the attack. I don't think we were able to get him into those situations as much as we would have liked to."
On going to D.C. down two goals:
"We go down there to win. If you get that first goal, as the game moves along, then you know exactly what it takes. Soccer is a funny game. Tonight I thought the breaks went a little their way, but hopefully we can turn it around next week."
METROSTARS MIDFIELDER MARK LISI
On returning from injury:
"After being gone for so long, it's always a good feeling to get back out there and be in a game-type situation. To be on the losing end is obviously not what I wanted or what we wanted."
On his physical condition:
"I felt good. I felt strong, trying to stay positive. I just want to get in there and try to create some things. It's tough going into a game when you're down 1-0, you just try to do a lot. We just have to go stay together stay positive, we have another game."
METROSTARS FORWARD JOHN WOLYNIEC
On the play in the box:
"Yeah, I turned on the ball and definitely got hit from behind and went down. I thought it would be a penalty kick, but calls don't really go your way, and you just have to deal with it. I believe it was Mike Petke who hit me."
METROSTARS DEFENDER EDDIE POPE
On the game:
"We have to score more than they do the next time around obviously. The first goal was questionable, I would like to see another angle of that. But we have to go down there and score three goals, obviously. It's going to be tough."
D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH PETER NOWAK
On the overall performance:
"We lost a little moving forward and I didn't really like the way I wish we should have started this game, but in the second half we started moving the ball pretty fast and we opened the wings. It was a very good effort all around."
On Earnie Stewart's goal:
"I didn't see, I just saw the ball come over the defender's shoulder. But there were a couple in the first half were Jaime was in good position, so it goes either was. No one can complain about that."
D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER BEN OLSEN
On the win:
"Obviously it's a great win for us. A win in the first leg away is big in any type of competition but the job's not done, we have to go home and protect our house, and do the job at home.
On the second goal:
"The second goal, I was just about to turn to 'Esky' [Alecko Eskandarian] and yell at him because he didn't pass me the ball earlier, and I couldn't really yell at him after the ball was in the net. It was a good effort all around, from 'Nelly' [Ryan Nelsen] in particular and Nick Rimando had a stellar day."
D.C. UNITED DEFENDER RYAN NELSEN
On the defense:
"You're never happy because I did have a couple chances. When you go away from home in the playoffs and coming out with a 2-0 win, you've got to be happy. I think it's a game when we're going to have chances and the game is going to open up. After battling through the first 50 to 60 minutes where we played scrap more than soccer and that's when its going to open up. Alecko's goal was just huge."
D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER EARNIE STEWART
On his goal:
"In all honesty with the four [offside] calls I had all game I thought the first one was offside and the other two I felt they weren't offside, and this one I did feel, or somebody said I was off, but in the end you get some and you don't get some. I don't know I would have to see, I have a feeling it would be very close, but in the end, we'll take it."
