Twellman named Honda MLS Player of the Week
New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman today captured his third Honda MLS Player of the Week award of the season, claiming the award for Week 24 which ended on Sunday, September 11. On Saturday night, Twellman's scored his second hat-trick of the season, leading the Revs to a 3-1 win over the visiting Columbus Crew. With the three goals, Twellman takes sole possession of the top spot in the race for the Budweiser Golden Boot, as his 14 goals are two more than second place Jaime Moreno of D.C. United.
Twellman started of the scoring in the game's sixth minute. Revs' midfielder Joe Franchino won a ball back for New England just outside the Crew penalty area and made a quick wide pass forward to Pat Noonan on the right. Noonan sent a perfectly weighted cross to the far side that Twellman met with a diving header for the 1-0 lead.
Six minutes before the halftime break, Twellman doubled the Revs lead. Steve Ralston sent a cross from the right that Clint Dempsey was able to barely flick to Twellman on the left side of the goal. The St. Louis native made a move and toe-poked the ball to the far net past the attempt of Crew keeper Jonny Walker.
Twellman put the game away in the 63rd, scoring his third goal of the night. Ralston again started off the play, dropping a pass back to Jay Heaps who crossed the ball into the area from the right wing. Twellman beat Crew defender Robin Fraser to the ball on the near side and headed the ball back to the far post and out of Walker's reach.
In a nearly unanimous vote, Twellman easily outvoted runners-up Herculez Gomez of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Dwayne De Rosario of the San Jose Earthquakes for the weekly award. The Honda Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
