Sports performance tips from D.C. United Athletic Trainer

Keys to Building Athleticism

  • Balance: Balance and coordination are the basics for every sports movement. Balance starts at the feet but involves the entire kinetic chain, from knees, pelvis, torso, and head.
  • Core Strength: The main responsibility of the core is to maintain dynamic stability of the body's center of gravity. This is where all motions originate. Developing core strength should be a big part of every teams conditioning program.
  • Reaction Time: Quickness can be improved by working on reaction time to visual, audio, sensory and decisions.
  • Flexibility: The greater the range of motion of a joint or muscle, the larger the potential for strength gains, and decreased potential for injury. Dynamic flexibility incorporates active movements to stretch a body part through a controlled range of motion. Since soccer involves multiple movements from the hips, it is important to stretch that way.
  • Ambidexterity: Some of the most successful athletes are able to do things equally with both sides of their body. This promotes rhythmic coordination of both sides of the body and brain. Training ambidexterity will also help prevent overuse injuries
  • Good luck with your training!
