RSL get Garlick, Talley from FCD
getting that kind of experience, more experience than D.J. as far as organizing the defense, and just kind of being able to settle us down," Ellinger said. "That experience is something that we felt was too good an opportunity to pass up.
"Knowing D.J. the way I know him, D.J. wouldn't be too happy in the backup role, so to speak," he added. "So it kind of made sense ... to get the veteran and an up-and-coming young 'keeper [Nolly]."
Garlick served as Dallas' No. 1 for the first third of the 2004 season and most of the 2005 campaign. Prior to that, he spent three years in Denver, moving to the Lone Star State at the close of the 2003 season after Joe Cannon had replaced him as the Colorado Rapids goalkeeper at the start of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Garlick has also had spells with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, where he set a league record with 184 saves in the 2000 season, and D.C. United, where he backstopped the club to a league title in 1997 and won 19 matches in 1998 before breaking two fingers late in the year and missing out on the playoffs.
Joining Garlick in Salt Lake City will be Talley, making RSL the third club where they will have been teammates. Talley was a rookie on the 1998 United squad that fell in the championship match to the Chicago Fire, and he played in all six of the United's playoff matches as they won MLS Cup 1999. After two more seasons in D.C. and two with the Kansas City Wizards, Talley was reunited with Garlick in Dallas in 2004.
With Garlick now departed, the goalkeeping duties in Dallas fall to either Jeff Cassar or Argentine 'keeper Dario Sala. Cassar took over for Garlick in the middle of the 2004 season and, after losing out on the starting job in preseason, had also replaced him for four matches in August of this year before going down with a separated shoulder. Sala was picked up just before the close of the international transfer window this summer.
