Rongen named Chivas USA's Sporting Director
Chivas USA President and Co-Owner Antonio Cué announced today that Thomas Rongen named the club's Sporting Director. The Dutchman, in turn, has been relieved of his coaching duties, while Assistant Coach Javier 'Zully' Ledesma becomes the club's Interim Head Coach.
"We are grateful to Thomas for his hard work, commitment and everything else he has done to get this project off the ground," said Antonio Cué, President and Co-Owner of Club Deportivo Chivas USA. "In his new role as Chivas USA's Sporting Director, we look forward to his continued contribution to the club's success."
Javier Ledesma was appointed as Chivas USA's first Assistant Coach on September 23, 2004. Previously, he served as an Assistant Coach with Chivas La Piedad (the club previously known as 'Tapatío'), Club Guadalajara's Primera 'A' affiliate. He was also coach in the youth development ranks of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, Chivas USA's sister team in Mexico.
"With 'Zully' in charge while we finalize the process of naming our new head coach, I am confident that this team is in good hands. With more than 20 games left in our inaugural campaign, I know will be able to turn our season around and meet our initial goal of qualifying for the playoffs."
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco on September 19, 1958, Ledesma was Chivas Guadalajara's goalkeeper during the late 1980s, the decade in which the popular club won its ninth league title, in a memorable final against Cruz Azul to end the 1986-87 season. Ledesma - whose nephew is Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra - also played for Mexican First Division sides Morelia and the 'Leones Negros' of the University of Guadalajara.
He is married to Elba Guadalupe Pérez; their children are Brenda Verónica, Arturo Javier and Iván Alejandro.
In his new position as Chivas USA's Sporting Director, Rongen will oversee the club's player development efforts, including scouting, schools, academies, clinics and personal development.
