MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2005 - CHICAGO FIRE 2, D.C. UNITED 3

CHICAGO FIRE HEAD COACH DAVE SARACHAN

On tonight's match:

"Obviously, it's a frustrating loss. I'm proud of my team. We had a push at the end and I really thought we were going to get the equalizer. It took us awhile to get going tonight. D.C. sat back and it made it hard for us to play. But still we never got our attack going and the ball wasn't moving as quick as we'd like. Being down 3-0 is a tough situation, but I will reiterate that this is a team that doesn't quit. We got ourselves going and pushed the game at the end. That part of it is a high note, but it is still a tough loss for our team."

On D.C. United's counter-attacking attitude in tonight's match:

"That's the way D.C. plays. But we didn't have a good enough answer for them, to be honest. I think that part of the reason was when the ball turned over, we weren't close enough to their players. We dropped off and allowed them room to go. We didn't execute [the plays] very well and they did a good job of it."

On placing blame for the Fire's defensive lapses:

"It was the team. We can't blame it on the midfield. You don't put the blame on one or two guys. A lot of problems happened tonight. You don't want to give up three goals at home, for sure. There were a number of reasons there were goals scored against us, not just because of the midfield. I think we're a great team defensively, but we've given up too many goals this year. They allowed us a lot of territory out there, and we just didn't do well on the counter."

CHICAGO FIRE MIDFIELDER CHRIS ARMAS

On tonight's match:

"It's embarrassing for us to be down 3-0. We showed a spark and some life and made it interesting, but certainly not good enough. I thought we had a chance and we did. We plugged away until the end, but we just dug our hole too deep."

On what the team will work on for next week's two matches:

"We just have to keep our concentration and keep our shape and not be so vulnerable on some counters. It's those little plays that clearly make the difference in games. If we go into the locker room 0-0, maybe it'll look different in the second half. In this game, we made it tough for ourselves."

CHICAGO FIRE FORWARD CHRIS ROLFE

On the Fire's comeback:

"We never gave up, obviously. You could tell at the end of the game that everybody was disappointed. We knew we could come back, and we really thought we could. We did have our chances."

On possible lineup changes to the offense:

"It's the same thing we've been doing all season. It's not going to change much. We scored two goals tonight. Thiago came in and, obviously, we were a little more offensive. There's not much we can really tinker with too much over the next couple of days."

CHICAGO FIRE FORWARD LUBOS REITER

On coming back from injury:

"Every comeback is very hard for players in this game, but I feel good now and I'm looking forward to getting back. I feel better now and feel very confident on the field."

On his goal:

"It was a good center from [Ivan] Guerrero from the right side, and there was a passback. I'd say I'd feel bad if I didn't score on this kind of chance. For a player like me, I have to score those."

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH PETER NOWAK

On the match:

"We played a very smart game today. Unfortunately, Freddy had to go. He's had a great run lately, but unfortunately those things happen. But overall, I think the better team won today, because we scored three very nice goals today. At the end it was a little bit disorganized, but Chicago was throwing numbers up and throwing the ball up top a lot."

On building on the result:

"I'm proud of these guys because we've had a lot of games lately and we're still playing very well. They knew that they could get three points tonight and they did it."

D.C. UNITED FORWARD FREDDY ADU

On his injury in the first half:

"When I was spinning, [Fire defender Samuel Caballero] came in and hit me on the outside of my right knee. I had my feet planted so hard that it forced my knee to go inside and that's when the sprain happened. We're going to have doctors take a look at it, but they're saying it's an MCL sprain. I knew right away when it happened. They told me to try to run on it and see if it felt better, but I couldn't."

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER DEMA KOVALENKO

On tonight's game:

"We've just got to get better. We got to get better defensively and we have to get better at finishing games. 3-0, 3-1 is OK, but not 3-2 when they have another nine minutes to go. We just have to be calmer and finish up the games. But whether we win 4-0 or 4-3, at the end of the day it's three points."

On getting his first goal of the season:

"The first goal doesn't matter the win is the most important thing and hopefully it's not the last one."

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER BEN OLSEN

On the win:

"It's a great way to start the second half of the season. It's a great tone to set going into a really tough place to play. We haven't won here in it seems like seven or eight years. It was the last time I scored a goal, so who knows how long ago that was."

On what to take from the match:

"We can take some lessons from this too. We had a 3-0 lead and we have to do a better job of keeping the lead. But we're going to enjoy the win and hopefully forget about it tomorrow, and then it's on to the MetroStars. We just need to keep building up the points so we can peak towards the playoffs."
