MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2005 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2, COLUMBUS CREW 1
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR
On tonight's match:
"I thought that we continued to play well and we showed some great stuff out there. If we had been a little bit smarter and done better I think that the game could have been over even sooner. It is great that we are creating so many chances."
On being in first place overall in MLS:
"I am very happy for the guys. We deserve to be where we are because they have stayed focused and played well despite all the things going on around the team. They are playing some of the best stuff I have seen in the last few years. The effort is there every game and we are attacking from everywhere, so I am really pleased with the team right now."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD RONALD CERRITOS
On becomming the Earthquakes' all-time assists leader:
"Obviously, it feels really good. Getting that record means you worked hard. In the end, I have to thank a lot of people. Those numbers always come from the help of other people. I just have to say thanks to so many people, people that I have played with like Eddie Lewis, Eric Wynalda and so many others. Guys like that helped me a lot, and it just feels great."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER BRAD DAVIS
On the team's play:
"Right now we are rolling. We are the team to beat, hopefully we continue to play well and keep things rolling. It is one of our goals since preseason to be on top of our division, if not on top of the league. We are going to continue to do that and keep striving to work hard. This team can do it, I know we can."
On his goal:
"It has been a while since I was able to step up to one. I continue to work on them and I can't say that I could hit one better than that. As soon as it came off my foot I knew it was going in. The next chance I get hopefully I can hit another one like that."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER PAT ONSTAD
On the game:
"We looked pretty good on Wednesday night in Portland and I think the guys built on that today. We played simple tonight, we let the ball do the work and we created a lot of opportunities. I think a 2-1 result is pretty flattering for Columbus with the way we played tonight."
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER DWAYNE DE ROSARIO
On his goal:
"When I saw Ronald [Cerritos] come out to get the ball from the forward position and drop back to midfield, I saw [Robin] Fraser come out with him and leave that area. I knew it was time to make that run, and Ronald has great vision, he played a perfect ball over the top. I felt the defense charging after me and I pushed it to one side to hopefully move the 'keeper along with me and keep that side of the net open."
COLUMBUS CREW INTERIM HEAD COACH ROBERT WARZYCHA
On the game:
"I'm not happy with the result, but I'm happy with the performance. San Jose is always a difficult place to play. They scored two beautiful goals and we scored only one, so that's the difference tonight."
On playing at Spartan Stadium:
"We didn't have too many problems today like we usually have here. Obviously they have some good players that can change the game, and Brad Davis changed the game today for them."
COLUMBUS CREW MIDFIELDER KYLE MARTINO
On the game:
"It's encouraging that we came to San Jose, a tough place to play, and for patches we played some really great soccer and then got some good scoring chances. But the point I want to make is that patches aren't good enough. We had patches where we weren't playing good soccer, we were giving balls away and we got punished for it. It is encouraging to see that we did have stretches where we got dangerous, but we need to make sure that we extend those stretches and be a little more consistent."
COLUMBUS CREW MIDFIELDER CHRIS HENDERSON
On the team's performance:
"I think we had moments where we played some good soccer. A couple of their chances came off of our mistakes. It's definitely disappointing. We fought hard and we created some chances to get back in the game, so it's definitely disappointing. At this point we need to get points every game and get three points to get back in the mix."
