Quakes tie U-20s in preseason match

In their second exhibition match of the 2005 preseason, the San Jose Earthquakes tied the United States Under-20 national team 1-1 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. on Monday morning.

Chris Roner, who missed the entire 2004 season following surgery on his right ankle, scored the first goal of the 2005 preseason for San Jose in the second half with an assist from Wade Barrett. The Under-20's responded moments later, however, with the tying goal.

Just like he did in the Quakes first exhibition match on Sunday against Real Salt Lake, Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear employed two separate squads for the first second half, allowing 22 players to play. The match saw two trialists once again take the field for the Quakes, as Pablo Paz, a member of Argentina's 1998 World Cup team and a Spanish First Division veteran, made his second start, and Johnny Menyongar also played in his second match. Menyongar, a member of the Liberian national team, has played the last five seasons for the A-League's Minnesota Thunder and scored six goals in 2003.

The Quakes face the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, February 16 in Bradenton in their next preseason contest.
