Quakes 2, United 0 – quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET

SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 2004 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2, D.C. UNITED 0

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On the game:

"The team is playing with confidence, moving the ball well, creating a lot of chances. We could have scored a lot more goals than we did. But I give all the credit to the guys for an all-around great team defensive performance. The zero makes me happy, and creates a sense of pride in the locker room."

On Dwayne De Rosario's performance:

"It just shows you that Dwayne is dangerous when called upon. He's always ready whenever he steps out on the field. I was happy for him to get that goal because he was putting in such a great effort tonight. It was one of those kinds of goals you dream about. If he keeps scoring goals like that, it's hard to keep him out of this team."

On success at Spartan Stadium:

"We want to win the games at home and get shutouts. That's what we came out here to do tonight, and we did. With the way we've been coming into the locker room and performing on the field, you have to feel good with the way the team is looking."

On the Quakes play over the last week:

"We had to travel to Minnesota, play on turf, play overtime, and then travel back, so it was a difficult week for us. But the resilience the guys showed tonight was very professional."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER RICHARD MULROONEY

On the game:

"We try to come out with the same kind of effort every night, and tonight we played hard and things just really seemed to go our way, especially on the scoreboard. This was a big game for us, if we had lost we would have been in a dire situation, but we have been playing better and it was great to get the two goals tonight."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER BRIAN MULLAN

On scoring Quakes first goal:

"I made a near post run, and Jeff [Agoos] crossed it perfectly into the middle, I thought that Todd [Dunivant] had it, and then it ended up to me and I just shot it. It hit one of their defenders, bounced back to me, and then I decided to shoot it again, and it found a way to go in."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD DWAYNE DE ROSARIO

On scoring Quakes second goal:

"It was a great cross from Brian [Mullan]. I saw it coming and I just knew that I had to find a way to get it in. It felt good when I struck it, and I'm glad it went in. Whether it was a great goal or not, the important thing is getting the win."

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH PETER NOWAK

On the game:

"We made too many individual mistakes. We put together a good defensive effort, but we did not play well enough to win the game."

On going forward:

"The past is the past. We have big games ahead. We need to go back to what we know best, running and fighting."

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER DEMA KOVALENKO

On the loss:

"We have no one to blame but ourselves. It could have been 3-0 at half. We have to win these next two games. We have to get back on Monday and figure this out."

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER EARNIE STEWART

On going forward:

"We have to keep focusing ahead. We have to focus on the things we do well and work our [butts] off."
