MetroStars present England vs. Colombia in doubleheader on May 31
SECAUCUS, NJ - The MetroStars in conjunction with Soccer United Marketing (SUM) and the English Football Association, today announced that they will host a prestigious international doubleheader featuring England vs. Colombia on Tuesday, May 31 (4:00 p.m. ET) at Giants Stadium in a match which could mark the first ever U.S. appearance by David Beckham. The second game of the doubleheader will feature the MetroStars and Chicago Fire facing off in an MLS regular season matchup at 6:30 p.m. ET (this game was originally scheduled for June 29).
"The MetroStars are very excited to be bringing this world class day of soccer to the Tri-State area," said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. "This event is sure to be a hot seller, and we are thrilled to provide MetroStars fans with an exclusive three week purchase window."
England vs. Colombia will be the second game of a two-match tour in the United States for England as they take on the U.S. National Team in Chicago on Saturday, May 28 (3:00 p.m. ET live on ESPN2). The Real Madrid duo of David Beckham and Michael Owen could be part of the Tuesday match following the conclusion of the Spanish La Liga season on Sunday, May 29.
The match on May 31 will mark England's first trip to the Tri-State area since 1976 (3-2 defeat of Italy on May 28) and the tour will be the first in the United States since the team participated in the 1993 U.S. Cup. On that occasion the United States defeated England in Boston (2-0) on June 9, then tied Brazil 1-1 in Washington, D.C. (June 13), before losing to Germany by the score of 2-1 in Detroit (June 19).
