MetroStars lose Brenes, Ziadie in 2004 MLS Expansion Draft

SECAUCUS, N.J. - The MetroStars lost midfielder Pablo Brenes and defender Craig Ziadie in today's 2004 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft. Real Salt Lake selected Brenes with their third pick of the draft, while CD Chivas USA selected Ziadie with their seventh pick.

Brenes, a member of the 2004 Costa Rican Olympic Team, was acquired by the MetroStars on June 4, 2004 as a Transitional International player, with a Discovery Pick. Once acquired, he saw action in 14 regular season games, starting five.

Ziadie was acquired, along with midfielder Mark Lisi, by the MetroStars on May 9, 2002 in a trade with D.C. United in exchange for midfielder Peter Villegas and defender Orlando Perez. A member of the Jamaican National Team, Ziadie played in 15 games for the Metros in 2004, starting 14. In these games he tallied one assist.

The MetroStars were allowed to protect 12 senior players and all developmental players for today's draft. In accordance with league rules, the Metros were allowed to protect an additional player when Brenes and Ziadie were selected. The MetroStars chose to protect goalkeeper Zach Wells in the third round and goalkeeper Jonny Walker in the seventh round.

The MLS trade window opens again at 9:00 a.m. ET on Monday, November 22 and does not close until the trade deadline on September 15, 2005, in line with the closing of the second international transfer window.
