MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SUNDAY, MAY 30, 2004 - METROSTARS 1, KANSAS CITY WIZARDS 0
METROSTARS HEAD COACH BOB BRADLEY
On the game:
"It's good to win at home. It's important for us to get a shutout. Certainly we need to have the ability to win some of these games. Kansas City is a pretty hard team to play against. I thought that in some stretches we were able to connect and move the ball well enough that we created some opportunities, but that's still something that can be better."
On John Wolyniec starting three games and scoring in all of them:
"John played well against Boavista the other night. He certainly had a good game and we built on that. We would certainly say that he has helped us this year."
On the significance of this game being the first win of the month:
"The league is tight. You play a lot of close, hard games. We try to still focus on how we can get better. In this last month, there were moments in games where it was OK and there were times when we say we're going to be a good team and it has to get better. Winning at home is important and for this team it was important to get a shutout. That's something you have to be able to do at times."
METROSTARS MIDFIELDER AMADO GUEVARA
On the game:
"It was a difficult game, however the main thing is that we won the game."
On the season thus far:
"I feel well, but we just started and there's a long way to go."
METROSTARS GOALKEEPER JONNY WALKER
On the play of John Wolyniec:
"He's a lot of the heart and soul of the locker room and he brings that when he's out on the field. In the chances he has out there you know he's going to go for it. And for him to put another one in there to take another late win in an important game for us is huge. It says everything there is to say about (John). I think he just being called up to the National Team is very fair and I'm excited for him."
On the win tonight:
"I think it was a great result for us. We finally were able to pin down a result and we've been in similar situations before in the season and we haven't been able to hold on to the end result. Tonight was enormous for us and the three points today were killer."
METROSTARS FORWARD JOHN WOLYNIEC
On the team's first victory in May:
"Yeah, it's a weird feeling. It doesn't seem like that long ago but it's been awhile. You never want to go a month without a win. Then again, it's only a month this year. It depends on how you look at it and I think the important thing is to get a win at home in order to better establish ourselves."
On starting tonight:
"Of course I want to start and I'm going to try to make statements. I just hope our team wins with guys coming out wanting to score goals when they step on the field."
On maintaining a starting role:
"I guess on some levels but you have to try and be fortunate. I knew this moment would come. Getting another start enables me to do the best I can when I get out there and make the best out of my opportunities."
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH BOB GANSLER
On the game:
"We played a good first half, but it is a 90 minute game. They (MetroStars) turned it up in the second half and I thought we weathered the storm. But, we have a lack of concentration on the freekick that led to the goal. On the other side of the ball we need to score goals when we have the opportunities, but tonight we came up short. After the first 15 minutes, which they dominated, we had possibilities to score goals but we didn't do it."
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On the team's performance:
"I thought we created chances but we were just unlucky tonight. I even had a chance myself, but I didn't pull the trigger. Next time I'll pull the trigger a little sooner. We had a lack of concentration on the set piece and we gave up another soft goal on the road."
On his injury history at Giants Stadium:
"Giants Stadium has my number, but at least last year we came away with a point. This time we were not as fortunate."
(Conrad suffered heat exhaustion last August at Giants Stadium and a facial laceration in the first half of tonight's match.)
