The Los Angeles Galaxy are the only the only team in Major League Soccer to have qualified for the playoffs in each of the League's first 10 seasons. They will meet the Earthquakes in a home-and-home, aggregate-goals series in the MLS Western Conference semifinals. The second game in the series will be played at Spartan Stadium in San Jose on October 29.
The meeting in Carson will mark the seventh time that the clubs have met in the MLS Cup Playoffs, but the first since the 2003 postseason. Overall, the Galaxy have won three of the first six all-time playoff matches between the sides, most recent among them a 2-0 win on November 1, 2003 at The Home Depot Center, thanks to goals from Sasha Victorine and Carlos Ruiz.
