L.A. Galaxy forward Joseph Ngwenya undergoes successful sports hernia surgery

CARSON, Calif. - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Joseph Ngwenya underwent a successful surgery to repair a sports hernia, the club announced today. Dr. Craig Smith performed the procedure at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, CA. The young Zimbabwean striker is expected to need six to eight weeks to fully recover.

In his second MLS season, Ngwenya has appeared in three games playing 54 minutes in 2005, all off the bench. In 2004, he scored four goals and added two assists while seeing action in 22 games, the most of any member of the Galaxy's rookie class. The Costal Carolina alum also participated in the Galaxy's friendly against Brazilian side Sao Paulo FC and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against the Minnesota Thunder. During the 2004 offseason, he trained with German club Hamburger SV.

In other news, the Galaxy signed four players to three-day contracts today, including goalkeeper Brendan Schwarz, midfielder Carlos Menjivar, forward Ryan Shaw and defender Chuck Kim. Both Kim and Shaw have already appeared for the Galaxy reserves this season. They are now eligible to compete in Sunday's 10am reserve match vs. Chivas USA on University Field #1 at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills.

The second edition of the Honda Super Clásico will see the Los Angeles Galaxy square off against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills on Saturday, May 28 at 7:00 pm.
