Hyndman’s lucky leather coming to LA?

NEW YORK – Since taking over in 2008, FC Dallas manager Schellas
Hyndman had never led his club in a November playoff game before Saturday.

But no one was ready for what the 61-year-old head coach had in
store at Rio Tinto Stadium last weekend against Real Salt Lake.

“I’m laughing because I can’t believe so many people are
concerned about that jacket,” Hyndman said on Monday’s edition of ExtraTime Radio.

In packing for a cold night in Salt Lake City ahead of his
team’s second leg match at Rio Tinto Stadium, Hyndman says he forgot his
regular lucky jacket and so the “butter leather” made its MLS debut.

“I wore that jacket way back when I was in college,” he
said. “It’s what they call butter leather. Everywhere I go, people talk about it.”

Hyndman told MLSsoccer.com that he bought the jacket roughly 15 years ago while still coaching at Southern Methodist in Dallas. He bought it from the Dallas-area men's specialty store Marvin Brown.

“He was more worried about trying to stay warm than anything up in
Utah," captain Daniel Hernandez said.
"Coach does his own thing. Anything that coach puts on is usually in
style."

“I was kind of joking with him [Monday] in the locker room. If he
wants to wear it, he can wear it. If we win and people are
superstitious, let him keep wearing it,” midfielder Brek Shea said.

The forecast high for Sunday’s MLS Western Conference Championship
in Los Angeles is expected to be 75 degrees (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2). Don’t put it past the FC Dallas
manager to travel the butter for a second week in a row.

“People are going to have to tune in to see that,” Hyndman
said. “But I will say this. It is part of my pregame preparation.”
