Guevara fined, suspended

Major League Soccer announced today that MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara has been fined a total of $2,000 for his actions in his team's 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium on Sunday. Guevara had received automatic fines of $200 and $300 for the two cautions for dissent awarded to him in the match. The second yellow card resulted in his being sent off, which also carried an automatic fine of $250.

In addition, the MLS Disciplinary Committee fined him $500 for disrespect shown toward the assistant referee, $500 for failing to leave the field in an orderly fashion after having been sent off and $250 for public criticism of MLS officiating following the match. Since Guevara will miss his club's next match this weekend while on National Team duty with Honduras, he will be forced to serve his red card suspension during his team's next MLS game on September 11 against the New England Revolution.

The next weekend of regular season action (Week 23) features a full slate of five games highlighted by a clash of conference leaders as the MetroStars (33 points top in the East) meet 2004 U.S. Open Cup finalists Kansas City Wizards (35 points lead the West) at 8:30 p.m. ET. The first MLS game on Soccer Saturday takes place at Gillette Stadium between the defending champion San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution (6:30 p.m. ET), the second game of a doubleheader which kicks off with a key CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying match between the U.S. National Team and El Salvador.
