Galaxy deal forward Gordon to Chivas USA

Ladies and Gentlemen, Flash has left the building. Or rather, moved down the hall.

The Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday traded striker Alan Gordon to Home Depot Center co-tenants Chivas USA for allocation money. The seven-year veteran had been the Galaxy’s longest-tenured player, with 16 goals and 12 assists through 99 regular-season games.

“I feel really excited about this opportunity, excited to get on the field and help the squad get to the playoffs,” 28-year-old said in a statement. “I’m a goal-scorer, and that’s always a good weapon to have on a team.”

Never much of a speedster, “Flash” became a fan favorite for the Galaxy faithful thanks to a tireless work ethic. The 6-foot-3 forward also was one the first Galaxy players to win over David Beckham during the English star’s rocky debut season in MLS in 2007.

“Alan is a big and strong striker who can put the ball in the net,” said Chivas USA head coach Martín Vásquez. “As we continue to reshape our roster as we push for a spot in the playoffs, this move gives us depth up front. We’re excited for Alan to join the squad.”

Gordon was drafted 53rd overall by the Galaxy out of Oregon State in the 2004 SuperDraft. He spent most of his rookie season not far from his alma mater, on loan with the Portland Timbers. He won MLS Cup with Los Angeles in 2005, and enjoyed his best season three years later, when he scored five goals and had seven assists in 26 games.
