and the first by any team other than the league's two expansion teams, Real Salt Lake and CD Chivas USA -- the Fire acquired Chad Barrett, a forward from UCLA. The 19-year-old was named to the All-PAC-10 second team in his sophomore season and he is also a member of the U.S. U-20 national team. Later in the first round (No. 10), Chicago selected Jack Stewart, a 21-year-old defender from Notre Dame. Stewart earned Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors after his junior season in 2004.

The third choice (No. 18) by the Fire was Will John, a versatile, young attacking player out of St. Louis University.

Back-to-back picks (Nos. 35 and 36) to close out the third round landed Gonzalo Segares (Virginia Commonwealth) and Thabiso Khumalo (Coastal Carolina) in the Windy City. Segares is a former member of the Costa Rican U-17 national team, while Khumalo, a native of South Africa, finished the 2004 college season second in the nation with 16 assists. With their seventh and final pick, Chicago selected Karim Deitz of Birmingham Southern College.

"From a personal perspective, we went in with a list of players we were hoping to get, and we came out of it with most of them," said Sarachan. "Taking two rounds out of the draft out made it a little more tricky than previous years, but I'm happy with today's results."
