Earthquakes 2, Burn 1 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET

SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2004 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2, DALLAS BURN 1

DALLAS BURN HEAD COACH COLIN CLARKE

On the game:

"It's very frustrating because I thought we played well. That's the best we've played since I took over, either this year or last. There was a lot of ball movement, our passing was sharp. We could have been 2-nil up in the first minute, 15 seconds. That's the difference - we've got to take our chances. We had too many good chances not to take them. They had two chances and scored them both. That's where they are and that's why they've won the MLS championship twice out of the last three years. I'm proud of my boys tonight - they were absolutely magnificent and I know they (San Jose) are happy to get out of here with three points. If we play like that every game we're going to win a lot more than we're going to lose."

DALLAS FORWARD EDDIE JOHNSON

On the game:

"It's always a good game when we play San Jose. They're a good side and that team's deep. We knew it wasn't going to be easy. We had a great start and I felt we were a bit unlucky. We created a lot of opportunities and unfortunately we didn't take our chances. San Jose got two chances and they took them very well. It's hard to bounce back down 2-0 at the half but I thought we showed some character there in the second half. I think if we had had a couple of more minutes or sudden death overtime then things would have been different."

DALLAS MIDFIELDER ERIC QUILL

On how the team played:

"We had a ton of chances as well as possession. In the first half, that was probably the most lopsided going into half 2-0 down that I've probably ever seen. We just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. We go down 2-0 and it gets to be the 55th-60th minute and you've got to start chasing the game and sometimes it just doesn't work for you. We got one back and then pushed really hard for the second and it didn't come. I think we played well and I think that showed in the chances we created and there's no team in the league that can play with us when we're firing on all cylinders."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On the game:

"Honestly I though we played better last week but then we were able to get out ahead of them 2-0 and we know that we are able to play well with the lead. It was a great effort by the Burn in the second half but we will take the win. We've played better this year and lost."

On holding onto the lead:

"It was a gut check for us. In the second half we knew they were going to come after us and they did. They kept sending crosses in but defensively we were able to hold on."

SAN JOSE GOALKEEPER PAT ONSTAD

On the game:

"Coming off of last week, just getting a win like this is important. We are happy to get the points. They put a lot of pressure on us but I thought we played well enough to win tonight."

SAN JOSE FORWARD LANDON DONOVAN

On the win:
"I thought we played well overall. It's a funny league because last week we played well at home and couldn't get the win. But we always seem to play well here in Dallas. I don't know what it is - it might be the stadium. But I always play with a lot confidence here."
