MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 2004 - LOS ANGELES GALAXY 0, COLUMBUS CREW 0

COLUMBUS CREW HEAD COACH GREG ANDRULIS

On the game:

"We had excellent movement off the ball tonight. Our possession was fantastic. This is a tough place to play. We had enough chances ... the goals will come. I thought we played very well and were unlucky to not get a goal. I don't think we put (Kevin) Hartman under enough pressure. Other than (Carlos) Ruiz's back-heel we did a good job of bottling him up."

COLUMBUS CREW MIDFIELDER DUNCAN OUGHTON

On the game:

"Tonight we played really well. Two games in a row we've gone into someone else's home and put together good efforts. It felt like a home game today. I couldn't fault anyone today on our team."

On his shot that hit the crossbar:

"It wasn't meant to be and the rebound was going to come right to Frankie (Hejduk) and (Kevin) Hartman was lucky to have it hit him in the back and fall right to him."

COLUMBUS CREW GOALKEEPER JON BUSCH

On the game:

"We were tremendous today. We played good in every aspect, we were just unfortunate to come up short on getting a goal. We controlled a great amount of the game today. It was fun to watch."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID

On the game:

"I thought we tried to string some things together. We were too direct, too anxious to get forward in the first half. We needed to push up, push forward a little more as a team, to sustain pressure on them."

"For some reason we sat back, that is one thing we talked about at halftime. In the second half, it got better. Arturo Torres brought some energy to our team, as well as Alejandro Moreno in the front. Paul Broome started to push up which made Frankie (Hejduk) work a lot more defensively. This allowed us to push forward a little more. Obviously if you do that you open yourself up in the back."

"When we moved forward, they still had numbers behind. It was a situation where when we lost balls, we dropped off a little too deep. This allowed them to come at us in the midfield. That is something that we have to get better at."

On the team's defensive effort:

"I don't think there was a lack of effort; I think we sat back. I think what happens is that players go out into the field and figure if we're zoning it and the play is in front of me, it's good. It's a matter of getting it through to them that if they're zoning it and the play is ten yards off it is not good; instead we should step up our pressure by ten to fifteen yards. That was something that Andi (Herzog) was trying to say to them the whole time 'step up, step up.' Part of it was our concern with their speed and balls getting over the top, especially with (Hong Myung) Bo in the middle of the defense. We have to understand the mindset that we have to push up and force more individual duels."

On the midfield:

"We talked at halftime about getting the guy on the ball more options so that we could find them better. Today that was not as sharp as it needed to be, that's something we need to do better."

On the absences of Chris Albright and Ryan Suarez:

"We missed Albright in the sense that much of our game goes through him. A lot of our touches out of the back go through him. Having the two changes forced us to play a little bit differently in the back tonight."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN

On the game:

"I thought it was an opportunity for us to come out and get three points at home and really solidify ourselves at the top of the standings. Unfortunately, maybe it was a little bit more exciting for me as a goalkeeper than it was for the fans. Now, we have to make sure we continue to push forward with numbers and be creative. Defensively, I thought the guys were good."

"Offensively, we'll continue to improve and put people here in the seats. I hope everybody enjoyed it tonight."

On what needs to change next week:

"We need to do a better job possessing the ball up top and give our midfield an opportunity to catch up with the play and when we lay it off, we need to continue to go forward again. Unfortunately, tonight definitely we did not get the outcome we really wanted."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY DEFENDER PAUL BROOME

On the game:

"It's not the greatest result, but probably a well-deserved point. It was kind of a back-and-forth match. In the end, Columbus did what they had to on the road, so you have to give them credit."
