Convey, Stewart to U.S. team

WASHINGTON, DC - D.C. United midfielders Bobby Convey and Earnie Stewart on Wednesday were named to U.S. National Team head coach Bruce Arena's 18-man roster to face Honduras on Wednesday, June 2 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. The roster features a mix of domestic and European-based players and will serve as the final tune-up for the U.S. as they kick off qualifying for FIFA World Cup 2006 against Grenada on June 13. The match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET kick-off, and will be broadcast on Telemundo via tape delay at 11:30 p.m. ET, and in high-definition format on HDNet. The match will be available live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics.

"Bobby and Earnie have earned this call-up with their current form," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "We wish them and the U.S. the best of luck in this match."

Stewart, who will be making his first appearance in 2004 for the USMNT, currently has 97 caps. He leads all U.S. players with 27 World Cup qualifying appearances, where he has tallied nine goals. The former Dutch Eredivisie star also leads the U.S. in minutes played in World Cup Finals matches, with 695, and is one of only five players to have played in three Finals - USA 1994, France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002. Stewart has appeared in all seven of United's matches in 2004, collecting the first of his two assists this season on the Black-and-Red's first goal of the season.

Convey, currently with 23 caps, is one of only two players to have appeared in all five senior matches for the USMNT this calendar year. He has been a mainstay of the Red, White and Blue at all levels, having competed in three FIFA World Youth Championships. Convey also led the U-23 National Team in scoring during the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament, held earlier this year in Guadalajara, Mexico. Convey, currently recovering from a hamstring strain suffered against Columbus on May 8, tallied his first assist of the 2004 season in United's May 1 draw in San Jose.

The two will not miss any time for the Black-and-Red as a result of the call-up. They will report for training following United's May 29 match against the New England Revolution, and will rejoin the team prior to the following weekend's tilt against the Chicago Fire.
