Chicago interested in Greek striker Stavros Glouftsis

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Over the course of the past month, the Fire have brought in no less than four players for trial stints with the team. So far, none of the trialists has made enough of an impression on Frank Klopas, Chicago Fire’s technical director, or head coach Carlos de los Cobos to warrant a contract. But that could be about to change.

On Saturday night, Klopas indicated his interest in the on-trial Stavros Glouftsis, a 28-year-old Greek striker who trained with the Fire for the better part of the last two weeks.

“He’s a good player,” said Klopas in an interview after Saturday night’s match between Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade. “It’s always tough when you come at this point of the season. The only negative [thing] I would say is that we didn’t have an opportunity to see him in a full match.

“He showed good stuff in training and we got to sit down and talk about with the coaching staff and see if there’s an opportunity to do something. He did well.”

Glouftsis, who attended both of the Fire’s Chicago Sister Cities International Cup matches, scored 27 goals in 34 games for Belgian third division side K Rupel Boom FC last season.

Klopas said that a decision on Glouftsis should be coming in the next few days.

“He had an opportunity to be here almost two weeks,” said Klopas. “I think we have a good picture by now of what [he] can do. We just have to see how he fits best with our club.”
