Chatting with ... D.C. United's Christian Gomez

Argentinean Christian Gomez has been keeping the a close eye on the World Cup. His countrymen are into the quarterfinals and the D.C. United midfielder is expecting big things.

What were you doing when Maxi Rodriguez scored to beat Mexico and send Argentina to the quarterfinals? How did you react?

Christian Gomez: It was actually quite interesting. I was in my car traveling to the stadium and was listening to the game on the radio with my family. We screamed as loud as possible when the goal was scored. The people in other cars around us looked at us as if we were crazy. We knew that Argentina had beaten a very tough team.

As an attacking player, does a goal like that inspire you?

CG: The truth is that in a such a tight game, it was the only way to win, scoring such an amazing goal. It was a spectacular goal. I hope one day to score a goal like that.

Everyone is talking about Lionel Messi. Can he be the top player of this generation?

CG: I hope so because we expect great things from him. I like how [Argentina head coach Jose] Pekerman is taking things step by step with Messi as opposed to putting all the pressure on him.

Only eight teams remain in the World Cup. Who is your favorite to lift the Cup?

CG: I believe the Argentina can do it if they get past a tough opponent such as Germany. They are my number one choice to win it all.

What is your assessment of the U.S. national team in the World Cup? What do they need to do to reach the next level?

CG: They did not look good in the first match, however in the final two matches the U.S. played the way they had during the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. In those matches they were the protagonist and took control of the match. It is a shame that they did not advance.

What attacking player has impressed you the most in this tournament?

CG: Germany's Miroslav Klose has stood out due to his ability and strength. He is a nightmare for defenders.
