MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 2004 - DALLAS BURN 1, COLORADO RAPIDS 0
DALLAS BURN HEAD COACH COLIN CLARKE
On the result:
"We got the three points - that's what we were looking for. They knew it was a big game for us. I thought we came out and started pretty well and had a few chances. We talked at halftime and thought that our attack was maybe a little too direct and that we needed to knock it around a little more to open them up some. Then, obviously, the game changed in the second half with the two red cards."
On getting a win:
"I'm delighted. We've had a lot of stuff go against us this year with PKs and non-calls and one thing or another, so it was nice to get one to go our way."
On playing two men down:
"Fair credit to the nine that stayed out there. They were absolutely magnificent with the work they put in. We even possessed the ball at times and knocked it around and passed it. We knew we had that little chance with Eddie's (Johnson) pace and Ronnie (O'Brien) able to get forward and we thought that maybe we'd be able to sneak something."
DALLAS BURN FORWARD EDDIE JOHNSON
On the match:
"Those games are hard. In that situation, you can only sit back and counter. I thought our players did good getting all eight players behind the ball and looking to steal one on a counterattack, which we did. Bobby (Rhine) made a good run up the middle and got fouled and got the PK. I didn't hesitate to get up there and to step up and take it. I wanted it. I missed one last year in New York and this year I got it back."
DALLAS BURN FORWARD BOBBY RHINE
On the penalty call:
"I was going to essentially tap the ball in and he (Ritchie Kotschau) grabbed my jersey and basically just pulled me over and took that chance away. But we got the PK."
On the crowd:
"I don't know if we care if they're cheering for us or for Chivas or whatever. It's nice to see our Hispanic fans back in the stands and maybe they saw that we can play good soccer."
COLORADO RAPIDS HEAD COACH TIM HANKINSON
On the match:
"We have to clearly be more ruthless when we see an opportunity in front of us. From the standpoint of where we are as a team, we have to reach a much deeper level of commitment and concentration and to reach for a deeper level of quality in our game. To play nine against 11 and not come away with a better result and lose concentration really shows where we're at and if we stay there we're not good enough."
On the team's mindset after halftime:
"We started the second half with a good level of confidence. Going into the locker room not letting up any goals and starting to create better forward play the other way is going to lend more confidence. But again, if you're not ruthless enough to capitalize and take advantage then you don't deserve the result."
