American Exports: Alejandro Bedoya, Nantes drop first of the season, Mikkel Diskerud on the winning side
AMSTERDAM – Alejandro Bedoya and Nantes suffered a harsh first defeat of the young Ligue 1 season, falling 1-0 at home to Monaco after coming up empty on a host of second half chances.
The Boston College product went all 90 minutes, putting in a decent all-around effort that included four clearances and three tackles on the defensive end. After Serge Gapke missed an early spot kick for Nantes, the home side would fall behind when Colombia star Falcao nodded home on the edge of halftime.
Bedoya had the Canaries' first great look at goal of the second half, but his own header was coolly denied by Monaco netminder Danijel Subasic. Nantes applied plenty of late pressure, including one restart that ended with a volley off the bar by Kian Hansen, but could not crack the net code.
In Norway's Tippeligaen, Mikkel Diskerud and Rosenborg gained ground in the Europa League race by blanking guests Sarpsborg 08 by a 2-0 count.
The US midfielder went the distance in solid but unspectacular fashion as the Troll Kids pulled to within a point of third place Strømsgodset, who currently hold the last league ticket to Europe with nine games remaining in the season.
