American Exports: Jonathan Bornstein injured during rough night for Yanks in Copa MX action
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Former MLS All-Star Jonathan Bornstein came off after just 22 minutes during Querétaro’s 2-0 Copa MX win over Irapuato on Tuesday with a suspected injury.
Bornstein had talked about using the cup to boost his chances of playing time in Liga MX ahead of the game, but his night ended early when he pulled up midway through the first half.
There has so far been no word from Gallos Blancos on how long the former Chivas USA defender will be out.
The win moved Bornstein’s Querétaro up to first place in Group 1 of the Copa MX, with four points from two games.
Sonny Guadarrama netted from the penalty spot for Atlante in their 3-2 home loss to Pumas UNAM, for whom Bernabe Magana was on the bench.
The win means Atlante are struggling with one point from two games in Group 6, while Pumas are on five points (one of which is a bonus point).
There wasn’t much joy for Club Tijuana, either, with Joe Corona going 73 minutes in his team’s 2-1 loss at Zacatepec in Group 3, leaving Xolos in first position on four points, but with Chivas and Coras de Tepic both holding a game in hand.
Finally, in Group 4, Stevie Rodriguez went 74 minutes as Dorados de Sinaloa let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 against Atlas at home and fell to last place in the four-team group, on one point from two matches.
