American Exports: Joe Corona scores game-winner as Tijuana take Copa MX opener

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – US international Joe Corona netted Club Tijuana’s second goal in their 3-1 victory Wednesday over Ascenso MX club Zacatepec in the first round of group-stage matches in the Copa MX.

Corona lifted the ball first-time over onrushing goalkeeper Jafet Camou from near the penalty spot after being put through on goal by Venezuelan Juan Arango in the 32nd minute. Later in the game, fellow American Paul Arriola came on for Corona to make his first appearance of the new season.

Elsewhere in Copa MX action, Herculez Gomez started for Tigres UANL for the first time, going 73 minutes at Estadio Universitario in the team’s 4-0 win over Altamira. Gomez almost found the net in the 16th when he cut inside onto his right foot and shot from the left-hand side of the penalty area.

For the away side, Austin Guerrero featured in goal and pulled off one spectacular save in the 28th minute from a long-range free kick.

Meanwhile, at Tigres’ crosstown rivals Monterrey, Alonso Hernandez went the full 90 in Los Rayados’ 5-1 road victory over second-division side Correcaminos.

Daniel Cuevas’ Lobos BUAP came out on top against Gabriel Farfan’s Chiapas, winning 4-2 at home with Cuevas going 72 minutes and Farfan completing the full match.

Finally, Jonathan Bornstein played the second 45 in his official debut for Querétaro, but the team slipped to a 3-2 defeat at second-division Irapuato.
