American Exports: Oguchi Onyewu reportedly on the way out at Sheffield Wednesday

Former US international Oguchi Onyewu’s time at Sheffield Wednesday may officially be at an end.

A series of Tweets from Sheffield Star reporter Dom Howson indicated that the Championship side have “ended their interest” in Onyewu, who has been training with D.C. United since late June. According to Howson’s Tweets, Sheffield Wednesday were initially interested in bringing Onyewu back for a second season.

A report on the newspaper’s website said the two parties failed to agree on “personal terms.”

It makes the veteran center back’s time with D.C. United all the more intriguing, considering DC’s need at the position and the fact that Onyewu is a local product. The 32-year-old’s time in Europe has been increasingly nomadic after mostly unsuccessful stints with AC Milan, Portugal’s Sporting and Queens Park Rangers.

He came to Sheffield Wednesday in January and made 19 starts, scoring one goal in an FA Cup win at Rochdale.

If Onyewu returns to MLS without a Designated Player contract, he'll be subject to the league's allocation order for current and former US national team players. Toronto FC currently hold the top spot, while D.C. United sit in fourth.
