MLS Fantasy Chatter: Erick Torres, Jermain Defoe or a quiet sleeper...who will you Captain for Round 17?

TRANSFER DEADLINE: Wednesday, 8:30 pm ET

In Round 16 the majority of MLS Fantasy owners went with a big name double-game-week player as their captain - Vancouver Whitecaps central midfielder Pedro Morales. Did it pay off? In a word: No.

Morales earned a measly five points in two games, leaving fantasy managers wishing they had chosen a player from the other, less desirable Canadian team at the time, who had four different players tie for the top spot with 14 points each. In fact, only two players from Vancouver tallied 10 points or more (Johnny Leveron and David Ousted).

This week fantasy owners are focusing on two players primarily - Jermain Defoe and Erick Torres.

I own both players, but as of this moment I'm locked in with Defoe as my Captain for Round 17. I've had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact Torres will continue getting on the score sheet for an underachieving Chivas USA side, but after his must-watch golazo against Real Salt Lake last week, the doubt has subsided. He is the real deal and should not be ignored.

Player Position Selected Price Total Transfers IN
Chivas USA Erick Torres FWD 16.8% $8.7 85 1,006
Chicago Fire Harrison Shipp FWD 22.7% $6.9 81 799
Chicago Fire Jeff Larentowicz MID 10.3% $7.3 65 733
Toronto FC Jermain Defoe FWD 19.6% $11.3 63 535
Toronto FC Jonathan Osorio MID 3.8% $7.1 37 344

So, is it down to Defoe and Torres? Or, is there another player - a dark horse maybe - that could steal the show with just one game this round?
