Chasing points? Who are the 20 most consistent players in the game? | MLS Fantasy Advice

Should you chase points? Yes and no.

It happens all the time. A player performs well and fantasy owners jump on him. It happened early in the season with Will Bruin and a few weeks later with Leo Fernandes.

But now that you have several weeks of data at your disposal, it's time to start focusing on form and points per game.

Below is a list of the top 20 players in MLS Fantasy based on points/game. I've removed any outliers by excluding any players with fewer than 20 total points.

The list is composed of three goalkeepers, four defenders, six midfielders and seven forwards.

20 Omar Gonzalez DEF 6.2% $9.9 31 6.2

Clint Dempsey is far and away the best player in MLS Fantasy at the moment. He's been in terrific form away from home – scoring 18, 14 and nine points a game – but at CenturyLink Field, he's been slightly less productive, scoring five and seven points. Every player will dip in form, but right now Dempsey is a must-have. His price will continue to rise.

Scrolling down the list, other than Vicente Sánchez (6.2 percent) and Jermain Defoe (13 percent), the rest of the top 10 are owned by more than 15 percent of managers.

It'll be hard making up ground on the rest of the field if you stick with the players above. At the same time, I wouldn't recommend straying too far from the list either.

There has to be balance, but picking up the "not-so-popular" top players could give your team a boost.

For example, if Brad Davis – currently owned by 1.5 percent of managers – returns from injury to play both games this round, it could be a massive week for whoever owns him.

Here's an extended list of the best players in MLS Fantasy based on points per game.
