Chivas USA not optimistic after rookie Thomas McNamara goes down in draw vs. Portland Timbers

Chivas USA earned a much-deserved point Saturday night against the Portland Timbers, but lost a key component of their attack in the process.

Rookie midfielder Thomas McNamara left the 1-1 match at Providence Park in the 63rd minute with an apparent knee injury (WATCH HERE) and could be sidelined for an extended period of time. McNamara, who had to be carried off the field, is scheduled to undergo additional tests, but the outlook does not appear promising.

“Sadly, it looks pretty bad right now,” head coach Wilmer Cabrera told reporters following the game. “We just have to confirm and wait. Obviously it’s not promising for us. That’s the sad part of this game. We lost a very important player. Hopefully it’s not a long period, but it’s part of the game.”

The 23-year-old McNamara went down without contact, clutching his right knee in pain, before being replaced by Marco Delgado. The Clemson product has started all six games this year since being drafted with the 20th pick in this year's MLS SuperDraft, and he scored a goal in his debut (WATCH HERE) in Chivas USA’s season-opening victory against the Chicago Fire. He ranks third on the team with six shots.

The Rojiblancos have fielded five different lineups in six matches.
