ExtraTime Radio: Real Salt Lake GM Garth Lagerwey on CCL failure, Pablo Mastroeni makes home debut
Dazed and Confused
The triple elimination of MLS clubs in the CONCACAF Champions League has left American soccer in a tizzy. What's it going to take for MLS teams to finally overcome their Mexican counterparts and win the continental trophy? Real Salt Lake and GM Garth Lagerwey know a thing or two about success in CCL: They're the only team to make it to the final back in 2011. And Lagerwey leans on his experience in the competition to shed light on the changes necessary for MLS to finally make a breakthrough.
One of teams hoping to get back into the CCL picture is the Colorado Rapids under new head coach Pablo Mastroeni. As he approaches his first home opener at the helm, the US World Cup veteran shares his coaching philosophy, the rationale behind some of his early personnel moves and his thoughts on Bayern Munich's Julian Green joining the US national team picture on the cusp of a World Cup.
The guys also debate the merits of the Green decision, as well as break down exactly when exactly a soccer victory celebration turns lame.
