American Exports: Jermaine Jones, Besiktas keep the pace in Champions League race
AMSTERDAM – Jermaine Jones put in a solid hour of work as Besiktas pulled out a last-minute 1-0 Turkish Süper Lig victory over visiting Eskisehirspor on Sunday.
The Black Eagles had a loud penalty shout ignored just nine minutes in, with the claim being that a defender handled Jones' dangerous cross from the right flank. Thanks to an 89th-minute Ersan Gülüm strike, third-place Besiktas stayed within two points of rivals Galatasaray for Turkey's lone Champions League group-phase pass.
Over in England, Jozy Altidore missed out with a knock picked up in training as Sunderland were ousted from the FA Cup by a 3-0 defeat at Hull City.
In Austria's Bundesliga, Terrence Boyd went the distance as Rapid Vienna clawed back late for a 1-1 draw at FC Wacker Innsbruck.
The US forward had a frustrating evening, with three missed second-half chances and a pair of offside flags while in a good scoring position. The result dropped Rapid to fourth place, two points behind the last Europa League slot.
Next door in the German top flight, John Anthony Brooks went unused in Hertha Berlin's 1-1 draw at Mainz 05.
