Manchester City, Liverpool to face off in front of New York City soccer fans at Yankee Stadium
New York City soccer fans will get a look at their newest MLS club’s parent organization this summer when Manchester City take on Liverpool FC at Yankee Stadium.
The game, set for July 30, is part of the larger Guinness International Cup exhibition tournament that features eight of the world’s best clubs. That particular matchup and venue, however, offers a symbolic connection to New York City FC, the MLS expansion club set to start play in 2015.
Manchester City and the Yankees teamed up to purchase NYCFC in May 2013.
The club’s leadership is still exploring options for both the team’s temporary home for the 2015 season – with Yankee Stadium a possibility – and a permanent site down the line.
The tournament, which also includes Real Madrid, Manchester United, AS Roma, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Olympiacos, kicks off July 24 at sites all across the United States and concludes Aug. 4 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.
