YALLOP'S SPRINKLER MALFUNCTION: New Chicago Fire head coach Frank Yallop was on candid camera in training last week, as he was mic'd up. While chatting and walking around the field, the sprinklers went off at an inopportune time. Still, the new manager saw the humor in the incident, especially since he figured it was caught on tape.
KEANE HEALTHY AND OPTIMISTIC: Robbie Keane spoke Monday while the LA Galaxy prepared for their first preseason game action this week. Coming off surgeries on both ankles, the striker talked about his optimism heading into the season and believed the team has found upgrades since last year.
UNION SIGN GK HOLT: First it was Andre Blake getting drafted by the Philadelphia Union to compete for minutes in 2014 with incumbent goalkeeper Zac MacMath. Monday, the Union added more competition to the mix by signing Brian Holt. The goalkeeper, 25, is a familiar face to the team, as he trained with them much of last season and trialled with the team this preseason. Holt also played nearby with the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2012 following a strong collegiate career at Creighton University.
KLOPAS ADDS NEW FACE TO STAFF: Impact head coach Frank Klopas went back to his roots for his latest hire for his Montreal coaching staff. On Monday, the club announced Nikolaos Kounenakis, 36, as the Impact's newest assistant coach. Kounenakis spent 2013 as an assistant with OFI Crete in the Greek Super League, the club he spent the majority of his career. He also had a brief stop in MLS in 2010 with the Kansas City Wizards. He holds his UEFA Pro License.
TFC'S SOCCER TENNIS TOURNEY: Toronto FC have yet to play a game this preseason, but that doesn't mean there's no competition in camp. Over the weekend, the team held a soccer tennis tournament, with Michael Bradley's side finishing second overall. Here's the video of the final:
CREW TAKE IN THE VIEW: The Columbus Crew had a day off in Florida on Sunday, and many took advantage by spending time at the beach. Club ambassador Frankie Hejduk did as well, but he also found time to check out a Crew Academy player training with the US U-14 national team nearby.
DALLAS IN THE MIDDLE EAST: FC Dallas are on a two-week trip to the United Arab Emirates. During the trip, where they are scheduled to play two games against local opposition, they're settling into their hotel and are getting used to some of the differences between Abu Dhabi and Texas. They have also had some passionate board game battles during their down time in camp, with Settlers of Catan becoming the new favorite.
RSL's REAL WORLD: Real Salt Lake are producing a video series titled "The Real World" (get it?) during the preseason. In the latest installment, Joao Plata and Olmes Garcia show off their dance moves for the camera. Looks like the preseason training regimen isn't too taxing after all:
