AMSTERDAM – Free-agent playmaker Freddy Adu is training with English Championship side Blackpool, MLSsoccer.com learned.

A source close to the former US national teamer has confirmed he is in camp with the Tangerines. However, it seems unlikely the 24-year-old would be able to win a work permit appeal to the UK Home Office, limiting his chances to sign on with the Tangerines. The Mail reports that Adu is a good friend of Blackpool caretaker manager Barry Ferguson, which would more conveniently explain the visit.

Sources out of Turkey also inform MLSsoccer.com that the former Rizespor loan ace has also had mild interest from top-flight teams in that country since becoming a free agent.

Adu, who last played in Major League Soccer with the Philadelphia Union, has been out of contract since his release from Brazilian outfit Bahia back in November. The attacker made just four appearances for the Tricolor, two in league play and two in the Copa Sudamericana.

Once thought to be destined for greatness, Adu's career has stalled after 10 years filled with transfers, loans and false starts. An MLS Cup winner with D.C. United in 2004, the Ghana-born midfielder has also suited up for Real Salt Lake, Benfica, Monaco, Belenenses and Aris FC in a career that has seen him ring up 31 goals and 17 assists in 204 professional first-team matches.
